About Us

MATERIAL KIDZ were born out of a desire to create a safe, non-toxic, uncomplicated toy for children. An American-made, hand-crafted, high-quality doll designed with toddlers in mind; it’s not only safe for young children but is also highly regarded by parents of children with special needs. Material Kidz are a collaboration of both nostalgic and contemporary ideas. Like an old fashioned paper doll, but modernized for today’s child.

Creators; Ruth Guinn, Donna Elliott and Shannon Elliott have varied backgrounds and expertise. Ruth, a Montana native owns an embroidery business specializing in unique and unusual designs. Donna, a Texas native and Grandmother is an artist and entrepreneur with retail and marketing experience. Shannon, also a native Texan, has a background in retail management, marketing and fashion design.

Donna noticed how much her Granddaughter loved playing with traditional paper dolls, but knew that they were too mature and not particularly durable. Donna wanted to create something special for her Granddaughter and her friends and shared her idea with Ruth. Ruth then designed the intricately embroidered doll that became the first “Material Kid”. Donna broadened the concept to include a way to transport the doll and clothes; a soft fabric case with pockets and handles easily managed by small fingers. Shannon joined the team to design hip, fun clothes and to formalize marketing and merchandising. Out of their combined desire and collaboration they came up with the perfect solution to dispel concerns about the toys available to children today.

Material Kidz was introduced in Houston, Texas in 2007, and expanded to the Web in 2008 after demand for the doll started to peak. They realized we could make a difference through the web and hope to reach the National Market.
